Another of my pieces for last December's Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the eighties art show. I tried to find a new way of depicting Mario for this picture, since the internet is full of amazing artistic interpretations of him and his dungarees and hat and moustache. Looking at the original Super Mario Bros. game I realised that before he eats a power mushroom he basically looks like a baby with a big bushy 'tache. And so....

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy from The Amazing Spider-Man movie.Firstly, yes I AM aware of how large and Jean Ralphio-esque Peter's hair is in this picture. As a life-long Spider-Man fan I'm looking forward to the new movie and due to the talented people involved I'm confident that its going to be great (note: must remember to change this post when it turns out to be rubbish). Unlike a lot of people online I also really like the new costume and discovered that its really fun to draw. So all my hopes lie in the hands of a giant CG Lizard-man (as always).

Bath Uni ICIA Comics and Illustration classes for February!

Introduction to Comic Book Art and Introduction to Illustration courses at Bath University ICIA are now open for booking. Both start on the 15th of February and run for 10 weeks. This will be the 3rd time I've ran the courses and they've been really successful and a lot of fun. The centre piece of the Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the 80's show. Each of us involved in the exhibition contributed to the Labyrinth poster. I drew Sarah and Ludo, Dylan Cook drew Hoggle, Jess Bradley drew Sir Didymus and his loyal steed Ambrocious, Mark Pearce took on Jareth and his MIGHTY package and John-Paul Bove coloured it all with his most magical of magic brushes. A mash-up worthy of some kind of Goblin dance party.

There's a word for people in our situation: Ghosts.

B is for Beetlejuice! As seen in the Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the Eighties art show held in December. This was a fun piece to do. Betelgeuse in the background is water colour and the rest is coloured in photoshop. I originally drew the staircase very straight and correct, with a ruler and that, but it just looked too neat so I went back and re-did it, making it wonky and Burton-esque. The Maitlands were a last minute addition too, but I'm glad I added them as they're one of my favorite things I've drawn in ages. I'll post more stuff from the art show soon!

Happy January to you all!This is a replacement dvd cover I made for my brother's Christmas present. I got him classic cult comedy WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER, a not-particularly well known but incredibly funny film by David Wain (Role Models). Unfortunately the dvd sleeve that came with it could only be described as "Done on 1996 era photoshop software, by a drunk person, in 10 minutes, during an earthquake. Also the person was blind." and so I used my artistic skills (my only skill) to create a custom sleeve. I'm tempted to do this for more movies as I've just seen the Terminator blu-ray sleeve and its explosively boring...

The A-Z of the 80's is a gallery exhibition dedicated to the movies, tv shows, video games and toys of the eighties, 26 new pieces of artwork will be on display, depicting the alphabet according to that influential and nerdtacular decade. The show takes place in from the 8th to the 15th of December at Centrespace gallery in Bristol.We've put a lot of work into the show and we'd love to see as many people come along as possible. Finally learn what happened to Skeletor after the events of the Masters Of The Universe movie! This was done for the Prince Charles Cinema's "Good-Bad Movie Club" screening of the movie. MOTU was one of the first movies I ever saw at the cinema, closely following the He-Man/She-Ra: Secret of the Sword movie, both of which my Dad took me to (he had to put up with a lot of Greyskull back then). Even though its a little dopey and ropey (and totally steals Superman's intro and theme tune) its still pretty fun and hold a special Gwildor shaped place in my heart.

Total Recall was one of those classic ultra-gore masterpieces I got to see when I was slightly too young. Along with Robocop and Predator, all the exploding heads and liberal F-bombs shaped me into a fully functioning adult (who spends his time drawing fan-art).

Also I once saw the guy who played Quato! (the man, not the little stomach-gremlin, that would be weird)

This is probably the most important picture of a goose bursting out of someone's stomach that I'll ever draw...

This was a comic done for Party Truck USA, an awesomely funny podcast by Brian Lynch, Rich Monahan, Brian Sadecki and Jordy Bogguss (as well as many guest stars) that races down the pop culture highway firing bullets of sweet comedy at all the movies, comics and tv shows along the way, much like that game, Chase HQ I had on the Commodore 64 when I was 8. I urge you to check it out and LOL your :( away.

After sending this picture to PTUSA I got a response from Brian Lynch which convinced me to send him a copy of my comic, that then lead to Brian offering me the chance to draw his webcomic Monkey Man and the rest is the future!

So the moral of this story is.... uh, draw geese? I guess... also listen to funny stuff. I dunno.

When I was 15 I was obsessed with Pulp Fiction and everything Tarantinoesque. Its still one of my favorites, one of those rare movies that tells a story in a way you've NEVER seen before and it blows my tiny mind (all over the back seat of the car).

I enjoyed drawing all the characters in little boxes on my Shaun Of The Dead poster and thought I'd do it again with Pulp Fiction's behemoth cast. You can see them in better detail here...

For $48/£30 you will receive: a full photoshop coloured image of any single character. Movie/comic/video game/cartoon characters, your own creations, portraits of your friends, loved ones, pets, anything! (except anything... y'know, weird...)

Tell me what you want me to draw and specify how you want it to look (full body, bust, specific poses etc). If you're looking for multiple characters or something more complex, send me a message and we'll discuss it!

If you want a drawing of your own character or someone you know then make sure to send plenty of good reference images.

The artwork will be 300 dpi, PSD/PDF/JPG. I will send the original line artwork to you if you add the extra for postage.

I'm currently teaching classes in comic book art and illustration for the ICIA at Bath University. Its a new experience for me but pretty exciting. If I'm going to yakyakyak about anything in front of people it might as well be comics and drawings and that. So far my lectures have gone well, a little dry mouth and the odd brain fart but nothing too bad. Although I seem to be unintentionally channelling Alan Partridge, which IS a worry.

As a quick first lesson exercise I got my students to look at the "American Elf" diary comics of James Kochalka and see if they could take a tiny moment from their recent lives and turn it into a journal comic. Above are the two example I did, recent moments from the hectic roller coaster ride I call JAMES.

Troy and Abed from Community. If you don't watch it then get watching it, because its probably the smartest comedy on tv at the moment. Sure, none of the characters are played by millionaire coke addicts who slap porn stars (and were in Hot Shots part deux) but don't hold that against it. I'm going to pay tribute to all the other characters soon but I wanted to start with T-Bone and Cool Abed.UPDATE! Check out my picture of the whole Community cast here!

This was a cool project to do. The most fun part though was posing as a Tom Cruise style cocktail barman for reference photos. I make a great, fake martini!

My tribute to the divine beauty which is SModcast, the weekly podcast of Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier which has provided background sound for my drawing for a few years now. I listen and re-listen to Smith's network of podcasts pretty much every day while I work and they've been vital in me living the life of a pro-illustrator (i.e. me sat at my desk, eating jaffa cakes, cursing myself as I erase a wonky arm for the eighteenth time)

If you haven't heard it before and enjoy deliciously profane sandwiches of hilarity then check it out. My filthy mind insists.

Update: Kevin Smith has seen the pic and deems it "EPIC"!

An art tutor once told me that he liked my art but wouldn't want to live in the world that I'd created through my drawings. I always remembered this and its influenced how I draw and specifically how I design my characters.

These are sketches for a graphic novel idea I've had stuck in my head for years now. It started as a bit of indulgent fantasy and wish fulfillment but I've slowly chipped away at the idea like a bit of marble and I've ended up with a story that I'd like to tell. I'm going to put more character designs up on here soon so I'd love for you to tell me if you could live in their world.

Its a bit like Avatar with less dragons, but ironically with people putting ponytails where they don't belong.

My tribute to Scott Pilgrim (inspired by an old Street Fighter 2 Turbo poster). The Scott Pilgrim books by Bryan Lee O'Malley are incredible and I've recently re-read them all in preparation for the final chapter and the Edgar Wright directed movie, both of which will rule like massive kings.

I draw a comic strip for Storm Force magazine, about the Royal National Lifeboat Institute saving lives on the high seas, or in this episode, on shore. This was a fun story to do as it showed a different side of the RNLI.

The artwork has to be seen and approved by the actual lifeguards featured so I had to make sure everything is 100% accurate!

Underneath that are two other illustrations I recently did for RNLI magazine 'Offshore'.

Summer is coming, and I hope I feel better by the time it does...

Ghostbusters 3?

Empire: Bill Murray confirms Ghostbusters 3 role.

So Ghostbusters (as I've mentioned many a time to anyone who will listen) is my favorite film and always has been. Now internet nerdrumblings suggest that in Ghostbusters 3, Peter Venkman will appear, but dead as some kind of ghost. Naturally the internet has reacted to this rumor with the logic and control it is known for...

Here's my verdict; This could be a really good idea, Bill Murray ghosting around the place, sliming people, doing what he wants and causing hilarious chaos laughs. Maybe he could be the new team's equivalent of Slimer? Maybe he could smooth talk all the ghosts into helping the Ghostbusters to defeat some super-ghoul type (feel free to steal this idea Ramis et Aykroyd). I'd like a well made threequel to my most cherished movie, not an Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull where Dan Aykroyd swings through the trees with the ghosts of monkeys.

Wait! Thats another great idea! Get Hollywoods on the phone!

I draw a comic strip for Storm Force magazine, about the Royal Navy Lifeboat Institution saving lives on the high seas. Its incredibly fun to do and its been really well received so hopefully I'll get to draw it for a long time.

Here are the first 3 strips I drew for the magazine (including one that was never published, which is a shame because it features a parrot being rescued from an explosion). More to come once they have seen print.

Die Hard (1988) - Gruber/McClane/Explosions e.t.c

I had an idea in my head for this picture, however once I started putting all the elements together in photoshop it didn't turn out quite how I'd imagined.

So here are two versions, on the left, we the viewer are McClane, seeing Hans through the glass plus our own reflection, and on the right, were Hans looking out and seeing John McClane about to Yippe-Kay-Ay our Kimo-sabe straight into the dust.

Let me know which one works best y'alls.

Here's another design I submitted for Threadless last summer. I was really happy with it, but it didn't get a great score in the end. Fortunately, not long after I found out my 3D shark shirt got printed so swings und roundabouts I guess.

Still, I really like how peaceful this scene is (plus machine gun toting cyber-humanoids).
